STARS,
NEBULAE & GALAXIES
________________________________________________________________
1. Explain why star trails form if a camera is exposed to light from a section of the night sky for a few hours.
Research:
What
is the south celestial pole? If you go out at night and
look south you will find the south celestial pole by referring to the
Southern
Cross. Look at http://www.ast.cam.ac.uk/AAO/images/captions/aat006.html
to see some images of star trails around the South Celestial Pole.
If
you draw an imaginary line along the long axis of the
Southern Cross and another at right angles and through the centre of
the line
joining the two Pointers, the South Celestial Pole is approximately
where those
two lines meet.
2. In the diagram above of the Southern Cross, the Jewel Box Cluster is indicated by JB. It can be fairly easily observed with binoculars. What is an open cluster?
